Since the founding of the “Place of Togetherness” Community Center 2023 in Rundu, we have pursued one central goal: to provide children and young people from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods with a reliable place to turn to – for education, nutrition, creative expression, and social support.

In 2025, we were able to achieve a major milestone in this spirit: the soup kitchen was successfully launched and now opens its doors every weekend on two days in the Suncity neighborhood of Rundu. In no time, the soup kitchen has become a central meeting point for the community. Over 250 children regularly come every weekend to receive a warm, nutritious meal.

But the soup kitchen offers much more than just food: after meals, the space transforms into a vibrant social environment. The children play, laugh, interact, and experience, for a few hours, what many take for granted – a sense of safety, belonging, and the freedom to simply be children.

The success of the project is largely thanks to the local charity group Ithemba, which organizes and leads the entire initiative on site. This dedicated group not only carries the operational responsibility but also ensures that all activities are implemented in a culturally sensitive, sustainable, and needs-oriented manner. In addition, Ithemba regularly creates play and care activities for the children, ensuring that the space serves not only as a source of nourishment but also as a place for age-appropriate development and a sense of community. Their close connection to the community ensures that children and families are not only supported but meaningfully included in the process.

With this expansion of the community center, we continue our mission with conviction: to reduce structural inequalities, improve living conditions, and create spaces where young people can discover and develop their potential. The soup kitchen in Suncity stands as a symbol of what is possible when vision, collaboration, and local commitment go hand in hand.

You can find more information about the construction and concept of the center on the project page of the Community Center.
